What is sudden cardiac arrest?
Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a medical emergency in which the heart unexpectedly stops pumping blood effectively. It often involves a dangerous disruption of the heart’s electrical activity. A heart attack is different: it usually occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked. A heart attack can sometimes trigger cardiac arrest.
A person experiencing cardiac arrest may suddenly collapse, become unresponsive, and stop breathing normally or only gasp.
Why CPR and an AED matter
CPR helps keep blood moving to the brain and vital organs until emergency responders arrive. An automated external defibrillator (AED) checks the heart’s rhythm and delivers a shock if one is advised. Not every cardiac arrest rhythm requires a shock, but using an AED promptly is essential when a shockable rhythm is present.
What to do in an emergency
- Check for responsiveness and normal breathing.
- Call 911 or direct someone to call, and ask someone to get an AED.
- Begin CPR immediately, following your training and dispatcher instructions.
- Turn on the AED and follow its spoken prompts as soon as it arrives.
- Continue until emergency responders take over or the person shows signs of life.
Cardiac arrest can affect people of any age
Although cardiac arrest is more common in adults, children, teenagers, and athletes can also experience it. Prepared coaches, teachers, daycare providers, babysitters, caregivers, coworkers, and family members can play a critical role before professional help arrives.
